Unequal Ageing
1. Seventeen per cent of older people have less than weekly contact with family, friends and neighbours, and 11 per cent have less than monthly contact. (source: Victor, C., Bowling, A., Bond, J. and Scambler, S. (2003) Loneliness, social isolation and living alone in later life, Swindon: ESRC)
2. Rising number of elderly abandoned at public hospitals in Malaysia. Ninety-five percent of abandoned elderly came from poor families. (source: The STAR - Monday, October 8th, 2012)
3. Why the elderly are not given the time of day today
- change in society's value
- assumption that society/government is responsible
- payback time
- need to work to make ends meet (aka busy)
- financial constraints
- simply do not want to look after their elderly parents
- could not make sense of the changes in parents' behaviours (due to insecurity, depression and loss of memory etc.)
- need/want space and privacy
