Unequal Ageing

Unequal Ageing

1. Seventeen per cent of older people have less than weekly contact with family, friends and neighbours, and 11 per cent have less than monthly contact. (source: Victor, C., Bowling, A., Bond, J. and Scambler, S. (2003)  Loneliness, social isolation and living alone in later life, Swindon: ESRC)

2. Rising number of elderly abandoned at public hospitals in Malaysia. Ninety-five percent of abandoned elderly came from poor families. (source: The STAR - Monday, October 8th, 2012)

3. Why the elderly are not given the time of day today

  • change in society's value
  • assumption that society/government is responsible
  • payback time
  • need to work to make ends meet (aka busy)
  • financial constraints
  • simply do not want to look after their elderly parents
  • could not make sense of the changes in parents' behaviours (due to insecurity, depression  and loss of memory etc.)
  • need/want space and privacy
